Our mission in practice
We partner with Long Island communities seeking to revitalize their economic centers.
Through a comprehensive Visioning Process that draws together stakeholders,
planners, and government, we help communities initiate dialogue
on the issues affecting the economy, environment, and equity in
their downtowns.
We work with residents, business owners,
civic leaders, clergy, youth and elected officials to craft a
plan for development that will serve the community's needs without
displacing residents or compromising environmental health. When
the vision plan is adopted by the municipal government, we assist
with the implementation of the Plan and remain a resource for
our community partners.
We promote the cleanup
and redevelopment of contaminated properties as a practical way
to create housing and stimulate growth while preserving open space.
When communities engage in Visioning Processes, we help them target
these spaces and transform them into commercial and residential
properties that will serve the unique needs of each community.
We advocate policies at the village, town, county and state levels that will revitalize emerging communities, protect open spaces, provide a greater range of housing options, redevelop brownfields, and foster greater social equity for all Long Islanders.
Through these practices, Sustainable Long Island advances a development model that prioritizes economic growth, environmental health, and equal opportunity, now and for generations to come.
